HCI Project Video & Transcript

Watch the video from here.

Brief description about the user

The person we selected is currently a second year student at Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. The user we've decided to conduct the contextual inquiry is not a professional handling all the activities in a website but he basically knows how to use a website when he needs to find something through the internet.

The Transcript For the Video

(00.01) Saranga: Hello! For our HCI paired project we’ve selected scoolnet.lk e-learning website. So I’m going to ask a few questions about this website, from Upul who’s sitting right next to me. Hello Upul.. Is this your first time using this website?

(00.18) User: Hello of course this is my first time using this website!

(00.23) Saranga: Okay. As a new user I want you to register to this website. Show me how to do that.

(00.32) User: Aaa… (User seems confused and lost) Actually that functionality is not available in the main page. So I can’t find that.

(00.44) Saranga: Here let me help you. Go to login then at a corner you can find new account link from there you can register as a new member.

(01.10) User: Mmm.. (User is thoughtful now) In my opinion it’s better to have the registration function right next to the login area. Also I couldn’t find the login button at the very first time because it’s too small.

(01.24) Saranga: Okay. I will look into that. Suppose that you need to search something from here. So how can you do that?

(01.39) User: Aaa..(User frowns at the screen) Search function is not available in this area. Let me scroll down. (Eagerly searches) There you go! (Enters a keyword and searches it)

(02.10) Saranga: So what do you think about the search bar?

(02.15) User: You have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to find out the search bar. That takes a little bit of time. In my opinion the search bar should be on top of the page. So you can search anything within a less time.

(02.36) Saranga: Okay I will look into that too. Suppose you are going to find some linux subject materials from these course categories. Show me how to do that.

(02.50) User: Give me a second. (User is confused again) Actually it’s hard to find a specific category from this content. You have linux administration here. Also you have linux training for teachers in here. Same category in two different places. That’s kind of a mess! (User is pretty annoyed)

(03.25) Saranga: I agree with you on that. These categories are not very well organized. Do you have any suggestions?

(03.31) User: How about adding a menu to browse the special categories?

(03.37) Saranga: Okay. That’s a good idea.

(03.41) User: What is this? (User looks doubtful)

(03.44) Saranga: Actually this is a brief description about this web site. What do you think about that?

(03.53) User: Well that isn’t necessary to have a long description like that on the first page isn’t it? You can place it on a separate place rather than having it here.

(03.55) Saranga: Okay. I will add a page something like About Us. So you don’t have to worry about it anymore. So what is your opinion about the look and feel of this website?

(04.28) User: (Thinks a little bit) Obviously this is very simple. The main issue is I can’t find the hosting company’s name. I would rather replace company logo and name instead of this crappy moodle logo. Plus I would prefer more colorful content like pictures and slideshows.

(04.55) Saranga: Okay. I got it. So I want you to go to multimedia and desktop publishing category.

(05.04) User: Okay.

(05.09) Saranga: From there select digital photography copy 1.

(05.13) User: Okay.

(05.20) Saranga: What do you think about this particular page?

(05.23) User: (Thinks a little)Well I can find the content related to digital photography. To be honest it’s very well organized because you can find each resource related to a specific topic.

(05.38) Saranga: Well anymore suggestions for this web site?

(05.50) User: The latest news bar at the front page should be updated. That’s all.

(05.56) Saranga: Thank you for spending your valuable time and see you next time.

(06.03) User: You are welcome.
